New molding method for green juice caps enhanced productivity and cut weight

Brought about the effect of reducing CO2 by 26.1 ton per year, daily production doubled to 1 million

Received Special Selection Award for improved container of a skin care product called “issilin First Serum”

Pulmuone (CEO Nam, Seung-Woo) announced that it won the grand prize (Environment Minister’s Award) at the 7th Green Packaging Contest held on December 12 at the Sheraton Seoul Palace Gangnam Hotel in Banpo-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul, for its eco-friendly packaging technology that improved the production method for bottle caps of green juice products.

The Green Packaging Contest, held annually since 2011, is organized and sponsored by Korea Environmental Packaging Promotion Institute and Korea’s Ministry of Environment respectively. It is a platform to discover advanced environment-friendly packaging technologies and designs. Packaging experts serve as judges to assess green packaging materials, and designs and technologies that reduce CO2 emissions.

Pulmuone was honored with the grand prize by advancing its molding method for bottle caps of green juice products to boost productivity and make them lighter.

Pulmuone used to produce the caps using injection molding method, but changing it to compression method enabled the company to secure product stability. The new method lowered the rate of defects that occurred when closing the bottles, and resolved the problem where tamper bands came off with the caps.

The injection method pours resin raw material into the mold for it to cool and solidify while the compression method injects the resin into the mold and the mold is closed, making the material conform to the shape of the mold. By changing the molding method, caps that weighed 2.2g became 10% (2g) lighter, lowering CO2 emissions by 26.1 ton/year. Furthermore, cap productivity increased, raising the daily production more than two-fold from 450 thousand to one million.

New caps introduced for 20 green juice products since November
The plan is to apply new caps on the entire line of products for green juice from 2018, and begin to use them for Pulmuone bottled water in the second half of the year.

Moreover, Pulmuone received the Special Selection Award at the contest with its upgraded container for a skin care product.

The praised container is for issilin’s First Serum, a skin care brand from Pulmuone Health & Living. The product’s new container was awarded for shifting from double layers into one, using less materials and improving convenience.

Having received the awards, Seon, In-Gon from Pulmuone’s Packaging Research Team said, “We believe that the awards are the fruit of our endeavors to develop green packaging.” He also added, “We will continue to work to ensure that eco-friendly packaging technologies are improved to further spread LOHAS values Pulmuone promotes to the customers.

At the same time, Pulmuone has been exerting efforts in implementing environment management consisted of initiatives to curb fossil fuels, and manage water to respond to climate change. As of 2016, the company set the goal of reducing carbon emissions and water consumption for four of its flagship products, including tofu and bean sprouts, by measuring and reducing carbon and water footprints in the entire stages from raw materials to packaging, production, distribution, and consumption.

The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Korea Committee, which is a global organization that certifies environment management, acknowledged the initiatives taken by Pulmuone and awarded the company with special awards for Climate Change and Water Management categories. In addition, Pulmuone Foods’ Korean Bean Tofu (for pan-frying, 300g) received water-footprint accreditation from Korea’s Ministry of Environment.
