Net-Zero Commitment
Pulmuone has established a long-term goal of achieving net zero across its value chain by 2050. To achieve this goal, the Company pursues direct emissions reductions for Scope 1 and 2 through energy efficiency improvements, renewable energy adoption, and process innovation. Scope 3 emissions are managed through collaborative reduction efforts across the entire value chain, including raw material sourcing, logistics, and product use.
However, due to the nature of the food industry, Scope 3 emissions associated with agricultural and livestock raw material sourcing, logistics, and other value chain activities inevitably include residual emissions that are technically and economically difficult to eliminate. Pulmuone recognizes that achieving net zero requires meaningful investment in permanent carbon removal (PCR) technologies capable of physically removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it securely over the long term to reliably address these residual emissions.
Biochar-based Permanent Carbon Removal
To address hard-to-abate Scope 3 residual emissions, Pulmuone is investing in a pilot project for biochar-based permanent carbon removal technology, which converts atmospheric carbon dioxide into stable forms of carbon for long-term storage in soil. Through this initiative, the Company is building a credible net-zero pathway that integrates both emissions reduction and carbon removal.
Biochar is produced by heating biomass under oxygen-limited conditions to create a charcoal-like material. It is gaining recognition as a key technology for agricultural decarbonization because it enables long-term carbon sequestration while improving nutrient use efficiency. By demonstrating the technology and applying it to raw material production, Pulmuone aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from raw material sourcing while permanently removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, thereby contributing to the achievement of its net-zero goal.
