Passive house 'LOHAS Academy'

Climate change 2017-12-08

“Passive House” is an environmentally-friendly building in Pulmuone’s training center complex called the LOHAS Academy, located at Pyeongdan-ri, Cheongcheon-myeon, Goesan-gun, North Chungcheong province, and it has been used as a youth training center and “a healing center for a better lifestyle.” The building received Passive House Certification from Germany in 2013 and won the Korean Architecture Award for private sector the next year.

Passive houses are called “passive,” because they require no active heating. This is possible because they are designed to prevent heat leakage, limiting energy wasted, and utilize external heat. To be a certified passive house, buildings need to meet strict requirements of the Passive House Institute (PHI) in Germany. To conserve energy, the main building of Pulmuone’s passive house has an automatic ventilation system, which facilitates the influx and outflow of air. Also, new renewables energies such as solar and geothermal are used to maximize energy efficiency.
