Pulmuone’s LOHAS Academy Holds Talent Donation Programs for Regional Youth

Community Contribution 2016-07-22

LOHAS Academy offers science and music camps every year for regional children with limited access to cultural activities

- Science camp will be held on July 25~29 with lectures from renowned science and construction design professors

- Music camp with concerts will be held on August 1~4 with Nazarene University’s Orchestra Department professors giving 1:1 lessons to 34 children in the region

To welcome the summer vacation, Pulmuone’s LOHAS Academy prepared cultural events for children living in the nearby region.

The Academy (Head Kim, Hye-Kyoung) located at Goesan, North Chungcheong province, announced on July 22 that it will be having talent donation programs, the “3rd Fun, Fun Science Camp,” and the “2nd LOHAS Music Concert in Forest” for the region’s youth in July and August.

Every year, LOHAS Academy plans and executes diverse initiatives to grow together with the region and practice the spirit of sharing by providing various opportunities and experience for regional children, who live in “cultural blind spots,” where access to cultural activities are limited.

In particular, the Academy has been running the talent donation programs for youth since 2013. The programs stand out among other initiatives promoting win-win growth with the region in that they enable youth to gain cultural knowledge, experience self-learning, and practice heathy lifestyle and dietary habits. This year, the event expanded the target area to add Boeun, Jincheon, and Eumseong to the original scope of Goesan and Jeungpyeong for more young people to enjoy the camps.

One of the programs is the 3rd Fun, Fun Science Camp. It will include two overnight camps and a single day event from July 25 to 29. Over 100 young participants will be able to join group lectures on multiple topics, such as physics, mechanics, and microbiology, given by lecturers including KAIST University’s physics professor, Song, Jeong-Hwan, Miami University’s Mechanical Engineering Department professor, Dr. Koo, Jeong-Hoi, Asan Medical Center’s professor Jang, Soo-Hwan, and Chonnam National University Hospital’s Dr. Bae, Woo-kyun.

This year’s program even includes special lectures for the region’s children to gain more experience.

On the first day of the camp (July 25), the former vice president of KAIST, Choi, Byung-Kyu, will give a guest lecture titled, “Making Product Designs Using Computers,” and on July 27, Kookmin University’s Construction Department professor, Kim, In-Seon, will join the camp to help the youth learn about construction designs linked to science.

Also, there will be another talent donation program called the “LOHAS Music Concert in Forest,” which first began last year. This year, the music camp will be held for three days from August 1 to 4, for around 30 elementary school kids living in North Chungcheong province that could not receive professional lessons despite their interest in music. The volunteering professors include the head of the Orchestra Department from Nazarene University, Jo, In-Sang, and professors Lee, Sang-Jae from the same department, Lee, Yoon-Jeong from Chungnam National University, and Bae, Il-Hwan from Ewha Womans University. Moreover, 40 students from the Orchestra Department will join the talent donation along with the professors to give 1:1 music lessons on ensemble, and orchestra, and even perform together the youth.

This year, Korea’s biggest musical instrument company will be at the camp to teach children how to properly manage instruments and help with turning and repairing instruments free of costs.

Also, there will be a student (13 years old) from Songmyon Middle School, who received personal guidance from Professor Han, Kyu-Hwa of Nazarene University for showing excellent talent and potential in the previous year’s camp, performing a recital.

The camps will not only help students learn, but also offer performances for regional residents to enjoy. On August 1, when the music camp begins, a charity organization called Beautiful Mind will hold a music concert at 7 p.m. with no entrance fees. Also, on August 3, when joint practices and one-on-one lessons end, Nazarene University’s professors, students, and camp participants will perform together, followed by the performance of Chungnam National University’s College of Music professors.

Pulmuone’s Passive House is the biggest environmentally friendly building with high energy-efficiency in Korea, and it is being used as “a healing center for a better lifestyle,” for both residents of the region and Pulmuone employees. During the camp period, not only music camps, but programs for lifestyle and dietary habits, such as “Bapsang (Meal Table) Class,” and “Experiencing Healthy Lifestyle,” will be offered as well, making the time at the LOHAS Academy even more meaningful for the young.

Kim, Hye-Kyung, the head of the Academy, explained, “With the help of many volunteers, we are running different camps to discover and nurture the potential of youth living nearby as they rarely receive the opportunities to experience cultural activities.” She also added, “LOHAS Academy will continue to make quality educational opportunities for the region’s youth and improve educational and cultural classes along with lifestyle programs.”

Meanwhile, LOHAS Academy has been contributing to regional growth via diverse routes. For instance, the Academy offers “Wholesome Foods LOHAS Camp,” for children of families without parents, or families with single parents, grandparents, and those from multicultural families to help them foster “good dietary habits, body habits, mind habits, and environment habits.” There is also a sharing initiative to help the regional population by donating proceeds from selling agricultural goods produced in eco-friendly LOHAS farms. In April last year, LOHAS Academy donated KRW 100 million to sponsor the “2015 Goesan International Organic Expo” held in Goesan, North Chungcheong province, and it is running a tree planting event to create “healing forest” in partnership with Chungju National Forest Station.
